Sanborn student Cooper Buck won Gold in the Southwest Classic Jiu-Jitsu tournament in October. Congratulations, Cooper!
Congratulations to Andrea Meyer, Sanborn kindergarten teacher, who was named KTAR News 92.3 FM's Gaydos and Chad Show's Pay Tribute to a Teacher winner, presented by Your Valley Toyota Dealers. As part of this award, she will receive a $2,500 check to use as she wishes. She plans to put it towards a field trip this year for the entire grade level to enjoy and experience.
Congratulations to Sanborn Chandler Education Foundation grant winner Mary Davis, who will use the award to fund the Keyboards for Music program.

The Sun Lakes Rotary honored Allison Lewis from Sanborn Elementary as Teacher of the Month for March 2021. She received a framed certificate and $500 from the Sun Lakes Rotary, sponsored by Trust Bank and Earnhardt Auto Centers.
Sanborn Elementary first graders in Ashley Nelson's class have been learning about sounds and vibrations. Students each created an instrument made from a variety of materials. Here is their class band!

To celebrate Read Across America Week, volunteer guest readers performed virtual, live readings for Sanborn Elementary classes.
Congratulations to English language development teacher Geneal Fendrick who won the Apple Achievement Award, Jordan Ortiz who was named the Outstanding Volunteer, and sixth grader Alli Woods who is the Superintendent Citizenship winner from Sanborn Elementary for 2021. Read their stories here!

Sanborn is proud to be recognized as a Project Lead the Way Distinguished School (PLTW) again this year! We are committed to increasing student access, engagement, and achievement in our PLTW program.
A team of Intel Engineers volunteered their time at Sanborn Elementary engaging students in various learning activities. These included rehearsing and performing readers theatre scripts, teaching an enrichment lesson and playing games in math, making paper airplanes, measuring glider distances, studying Project Lead the Way pushes and pulls, guest speaking on art techniques, and flying a drone. A kindergarten student summed up the experience stating, "Engineer Thor was just like Superhero Thor!"
Sanborn Elementary held their fifth annual Patriotic Picnic to kick off the Presidents Day weekend and spend some quality time together as a school community. Families enjoyed lunch together, a photo booth, 9-square, fabulous weather, and some patriotic music performed by second graders.

Congratulations to Michelle Coffman, this year's Outstanding Volunteer Award winner for Sanborn! Michelle has volunteered in the classroom reading with students, in the workroom making copies and materials, at PTO events, as an Art Masterpiece instructor, and on our Site Council. We appreciate all the time and energy she devotes to our Sanborn students and community!
Congratulations to Rowan Scott, Madison Price, Sophia Coria, Brooke Mehlberg, Ilse Lopez, Sofia Iglesias-Cortez, Mia Velasquez, Faith Bishop, Jessabel Fernandez, Abigail Soto, Jada Miller, Andrea Valdez, Marina Rodriguez, Emily Medina, Anaya Cortez, Makyha Bryant and Anahi Hernandez who were selected to attend Hermanas (Sisters): DiseƱa tu futuro (Design Your Future) . This one-day conference provides a supportive environment in which young women can interact with successful Latinas professionals in STEM careers, explore technological careers, receive encouragement to finish school, attend college, and to pursue their goals. Hermanas has partnered with the Intel Corporation since 2006 to plan and host a day of learning and fun activities to stimulate interest in STEM.
Omar was honored with Chandler High School's Scruffy Tuffy Award because he showed courage in making the right decision even when his peers were pressuring him to decide differently. He demonstrated responsibility, trustworthiness, caring, and citizenship in this situation making him very deserving of this recognition.
Savannah Romero was honored with Chandler High School's Scruffy Tuffy Award because she helped out a staff member with a medical issue demonstrating the character traits of responsibility, citizenship, and a very caring heart.

Congratulations to Rosa Flores who was honored with an Apple Achievement Award at the Chandler Center for the Arts on February 5.
Leslie Russell, Community Outreach and Education Coordinator for the Attorney General's Office came to Sanborn Elementary to talk with students about Internet safety and how to best protect their personal information and identity while gaming or using social media. She presented this important information during two separate assemblies in an engaging, age-appropriate, and straightforward manner.
Superintendent's Student Citizenship Award winner: Nasir is an inquisitive, thoughtful and hard-working student. He decided at a young age that his goal was to become student body president of a school. He stayed focused, listened to his peers about their concerns, ran for the position of Student Body President at Sanborn, and was elected! In his application, he mentioned solutions to problems. Nasir focuses on the concerns and issues of the Sanborn community.
Sanborn 5th graders worked collaboratively in small teams to build robots and design them to master a course involving several turns and maneuvers. They even taught Principal Caryn Cole how to drive one of them.
Congratulations to our Sanborn school spelling bee top spellers: Sebastian Williams (champion) and Alexis Muro (runner-up).
Congratulations to Sanborn Special Education Department Chair Danielle Harris and Dean of Students Torie Brown who graduated in December from NAU and ASU respectively with masters degrees in Educational Leadership.
Sanborn Elementary staff dressed up as 101 dalmations on Halloween. Principal Caryn Cole was Cruella de Vil, and Dean Torie Brown was the Dog Catcher. The kids loved it at drop-off in the morning.
Anahi Hernandez was honored by Chandler High School with the Scruffy's Tuffys Achievement Award. Anahi has demonstrated exceptional character in her academics as well as social interactions with students and staff. She is a shining leader here at Sanborn and is so very deserving of this award.
Mrs. Fendrick does some copywriting for the creative director at Fox Restaurant Concepts. Her rooster lore is displayed on the wall at North Italia in Del Mar, California. Over the summer she was able to stop in to take a picture with her work!
Twelve Sanborn Elementary students (Joshua Holloman, Cameron Knotts, Cameron Sitarz, Gabi Hodgins, Landen Blakes, Natalie Hall, Talon Price, Adan Sanchez-Bernal, Nathaniel Vega, Addison Schattenberg, Cole Benson and Tyler Cornille) were selected as winners in the Young American Poetry Project. Poems were evaluated on creativity, sensory/figurative images, structure, and use of poetic techniques. Their poems will be published in the 25th edition of the Young American Poetry Digest.

Congratulations to Sanborn Elementary, honored as one of only 214 elementary schools in the U.S. as a Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Distinguished School, recognized for providing broad access to transformative learning opportunities for students through its Launch PLTW programs. Whether designing a car safety belt or building digital animations based on their own short stories, PLTW Launch students engage in critical and creative thinking, build teamwork skills, and develop a passion for and confidence in STEM subjects.
